Luke Pomphrey
‘Mise en PlaceService’
Bristol based artist, Luke Pomphery, will be sharing his new work with us at the next 'PEAR' on Thursday 26th March 2009! Here is an introduction, from Luke, to what he will be doing!
I am going to be running a fine-dining restaurant at ‘Pear’ throughout the duration of the evening. The cooking will happen in the kitchen in the main room, and the dining room is going to be separate in an adjoined room. The dining room will have space for a single table, set for only two diners. The work is designed this way so the focus of the audience is at this stage on the work in the kitchen. In following works the diners experience will be re-incorporated.
This work is a return to making art for me, and being really honest, I am not exactly clear about all of the things it could be about and even that are most interesting to me. So I want to set this up and see what works. My intention is that this work will be the start of many dialogues and finding direction. It is a new beginning of sorts using the very definite skills and techniques I have developed working professionally as a chef in fine-dining restaurants. This is where my aims are very clear, in turning work and technique –tacit knowledge-in to performance and spectacle, followed by dialogue and critique, learning, evolution and re-presentation.
The title refers to the format of the work. In two distinct parts, the first ‘Mise en Place’, is everything that must take place before and up to the point of ‘Service’; part two, where the diners take place in the restaurant and the kitchen cooks for them. This is gastronomy.
The Menu will consist of dishes that are replicas of well-known dishes from a selection of fine dining restaurants. Each dish, each course, demands a perfection, an attempt at a technical reproduction of its original.
The equipment needed will be only those items necessary to cook exactly the dishes on the menu, nothing extra. This is a principle I call Inventory.

The first pear!
PERFORMANCES by;
Jamie Glew-Osborne
Starting the evenings performances....
Jamie is a second year Music student at Dartington who treated us to a few of his own songs as well as one by Elliot Smith, and was back by popular demand later on in the evening!

Hannah Sullivan
Hannah is a third year theatre and visual practices student who is interested in walking and mapping and how to express this through words, video and wall based art. She read from her book '44 walks - an extract' which accompanied her exhibition.

'WALK 3 MONDAY 13th OCTOBER I fell into a hole and found myself at the back of H and M, with the jeans. Behind a rack of hats is a man reading a book…in H and M. Along the street they are roasting chestnuts on barrels they pull out of the sewers in the early hours. Further down a man turns the handle of a music box while a small kitten crawls over him. You can hear that music all the way down the street but there are no more kittens. A man comes out of the metro and wipes his forehead with a white handkerchief. He also wipes his eye. A man puts a red scarf on his head and the woman next to him smiles. Pharmacies and scarves and pictures of girls with long curly hair. A stack of carpet and a tub of tools. Watches and nose studs. LA GARE DU NORD. LA GARE DU NORD!'
This work stemmed from a two month project she executed in Paris in October/November of 2008...to see more go to www.walkinginparis.blogspot.com
Francesca Dunford
Chez is a third year Theatre and Choreography student who also sings and plays the ukulele. At 'Pear' she performed 'Friday night' written by her close friend.

Chez (along with Jessie Percival) was also part of an Improvisation with head torches later on in the evening, audience members were free to look out of the window, towards the railway, as and when they wished, to see the movement, the dancing of the lights in the land between the house and the trains!
Grace Billings
Grace is a third year Music student and part of the band 'Matt Board and The Family Tree', whose interests lie in songwriting. For 'Pear' she graced us with a new song of hers, 'The Cat Song'.

'..my mind still wanders your way your so moved on so moved on im happy that your happy and im so that did you wrong and if a cat had nine lives then ive got ten 'cus im costantly coming back again and again and again and if a cat has nine lives then i've got ten 'cus im constantly starting over again and again and again and again....'
